Developers of a well-known privacy cryptocurrency are preparing for a major network overhaul. On October 22, 2026, core engineers working on Zcash confirmed the final launch plan for an upgrade called Network Upgrade 7, or NU7. The upgrade is scheduled to activate at block height 3,543,405 on the main blockchain. If block creation speeds stay on track, the upgrade will go live between November 5 and November 6.
Zcash is a popular digital coin that launched in 2016. It was created to give people strong financial privacy when making online payments. While normal blockchains like Bitcoin show all wallet balances and transaction histories to the public, Zcash uses advanced computer math called zero-knowledge proofs. Think of a zero-knowledge proof like proving you know the secret password to a door without actually saying the password out loud. This special math lets users send coins without revealing their wallet addresses or transfer amounts.
The NU7 upgrade brings several big technical improvements to the network. The most important change cuts the time it takes to produce a new block. Currently, Zcash creates a new block every seventy-five seconds. The NU7 upgrade cuts that block time down to just twenty-five seconds. This three-fold speed boost will allow transactions to confirm much faster. It makes the coin far easier to use for daily shopping and merchant payments.
The upgrade also introduces a new fee-burning mechanism. Under the new rules, the network will automatically burn sixty percent of all transaction fees. Burning coins means sending them to an unusable digital address where they are destroyed forever. It works like burning paper cash so fewer coins exist in circulation. This reduces the total supply of coins over time, creating deflationary pressure when network usage is high.
In addition, the upgrade retires Zcash’s oldest privacy pool, known as Sprout. Sprout was the original privacy system created when Zcash first launched. Retiring this older system allows software developers to clean up the computer codebase. It removes outdated cryptography and improves overall network security. Users who still hold coins in legacy Sprout addresses are urged to move their funds to modern shielded pools like Orchard and Sapling.
The upgrade also marks the retirement of the original node software, called zcashd. Node operators and mining pools are migrating to a modern, memory-safe node implementation called Zebra. Developed by
the Zcash Foundation in the Rust programming language, Zebra provides better performance, faster block verification, and stronger defense against cyberattacks. Unlike older C++ software, Rust prevents memory bugs that hackers often exploit to crash computer nodes.
Faster block production will also help decentralized applications that run on privacy rails. Mobile wallet apps will be able to synchronize shielded transactions in seconds rather than minutes. This improvement solves one of the biggest complaints from everyday mobile users who found earlier privacy wallets slow to load.
Node operators must download Zebra version 7.0 or later before block 3,543,405 arrives. Major cryptocurrency exchanges like Binance and Coinbase are testing node compatibility to avoid deposit interruptions during the transition. Wallet providers have released updated firmware to support the 25-second block tempo. Users holding shielded ZEC can still use view keys to share audit records with tax authorities without exposing private spending keys.
The Zcash Foundation also confirmed that technical support will be available around the clock on activation day to assist validators and community pools. Real-time telemetry dashboards will track block propagation and network health during the hard fork.
Zcash developers and community members are now coordinating node updates across global mining pools and exchanges. Mining pools have already begun running test blocks on testnets to ensure stability. If the rollout goes smoothly, the NU7 upgrade will make Zcash faster, safer, and more efficient for privacy-conscious users around the world.
